Overview

Name | Version: Boba 1.0
Author: OspreyInstruments
Device Type: Audio Effect
Description: I won't beat around the bush. This is my take on Soothe2.

Boba applies an FFT of an internal/external side-chain input to determine which frequency bin is above the threshold. The threshold itself is roughly weighted to pink noise, and can be shifted up or down using the "Thresh" dial. The difference between the actual level and threshold level is evaluated for a given frequency, then up to that amount of gain reduction can be applied to the carrier (main) signal when "Depth" is at 100%.

The reduction is actually done with envelope followers on each frequency band, so the timing can be adjusted with the "Attack" and "Release" controls. There is also a 5-band EQ on the side-chain signal before the FFT so that you can emphasis the frequency you want to focus your reduction on by boosting, or conversely, deemphasis what you the frequencies you don't want to analyze but applying an EQ cut. This can be somewhat counterintuitive at first, but proves to be an effective control mechanism, as a boosted frequency is more likely to pass the threshold levels in that frequency region.

Additionally, there you can switch between stereo mode (left/right) and mid-side mode, as well as tune the amount of stereo linking.

Legend!
this is awesome! it would be nice to have a gain inside the device to make up for the reduction and I wish the UI were more native looking, it's not changing according to the user theme and doesn't fit well with the other devices.
Some mixes can really get cleaned up with EQ's like this. I'm on it!
Yo thank you so much, I can't believe you actually made this in Max! Awesome stuff.
Like seriously though; I've been looking for an affordable alternative to S**the ever since I learned about it, and I can't believe you put this out for free. I'm sorry I'm broke, I would absolutely donate if I could!
Thank you!
Hi there,

Thank you for this wonderful tool! Where can i find some detailed instructions? I am in particular interested in the external sidechaining. I was expecting to see the usual input selector when activating the external sidechain for me to indicate to the device what it should listen to...

Thx in advance!
Excellent!!
And, agreed I'd love to use the external sidechain. But there does not seem to be anyway to choose the source.
This is incredible and it works even without latency! I wish I would have found this before I spent money on Soothe.
This looks cool but im afraid i'm a bit of a n00b?

Is there a Manuel or video tutorial? I searched YouTube without luck. haha

I don't have a clue how to use it and I'm pretty deep into music and Ableton haha.

I have to find value then I'll make a contribution (coffee or beer?)-THANK YOU!!!
whoops...I do see some useful info on your site and the YouTube dude embedded  on your site is quite enthusiastic about it and offers useful info.

Having said that I personally-and I would think others-need a Manuel or a compressive 101  tutorial.

I know it's free and I probably sound like an ingrate. I hope I don't. I'm just communicating.

Thanks again and I'll get it figured out over time I hope.

PEACE!
nice
- Sounds really good
- Love the cat
- Wish it had a gain compensation knob
