Overview

Name | Version: MIDIMUSE 1.1
Author: bubbleandsquawk
Device Type: MIDI Effect
Description: MIDIMUSE is an algorithmic MIDI sequencer for use in Ableton Live. It is based upon the Triadex Muse, a sequencer based synthesizer originally designed in 1969.

The original Muse produced it's sounds via a simple square wave oscillator. MIDIMUSE instead produces MIDI note data so that it can be used to sequence any Instrument or VST in Live.

MIDIMUSE has been built in gen~ for sample accurate timing and high performance.

Features:
- Clock Sync - Sync with Live's clock. The clock resolution can be adjusted from whole notes to 32nd notes.
- Counter Direction - The direction of the binary counter that runs MIDIMUSE can be reversed. This will more or less play your MIDI pattern backwards. To test this set up interval A, B, & C to C1, C2, and C4 respectively. Play the pattern to hear an ascending scale. Switch the direction to "-" to hear a descending scale. Due to they way the bits move through the shift register, unexpected results may occur when programming more complex patterns. Consider this feature experimental.
- Rest mode - As found on the OG Muse. Turns the lowest note into a rest.
- Root note transposition.
- Scale Quantizer - 14 selectable presets.
- Mini "Light Show" display (from the original Muse user manual - "See the music you create on your Muse expressed in color and motion".
- Step advance - The mini "light show" display doubles as a step advance button when the transport is not running.
- Reload - A small  button is provided on the right side of the device should you wish to clear the bits from the shift register and start the melody from the beginning (there may be an update in the future to reset at transport 1. 1. 1. - we'll see). Please note, for best results use reload only when transport is stopped.
- Intuitive GUI - The Interval and Theme "sliders" can be adjusted via the dials or the slider UI below.
- Mapped to Push - Control MIDIMUSE from an Ableton Push controller

User guide coming soon (original Muse programming guide available here (https://till.com/articles/muse/TriadexMuseProgrammingManual.pdf)

Please check out Donald Tillman's excellent Javascript Muse here (https://till.com/articles/muse/).

System Requirements: MIDIMUSE requires at least Ableton Live 10 and Max 8.3. It has been tested as working for Mac. Should be fine for Windows. Feel free to get in touch if you have any issues.

Where is the tutorial video for this???
Hi zeph! I don't currently have any plans to make one. The original Muse is well documented. Please check out Donald Tillman's excellent Javascript version here for a more in depth explanation of how it works - https://till.com/articles/muse/

a video of it in action would be helpful to see what it does before spending $$.
Another vote here for a video please before I'd be tempted to buy
"video, or your device never happened". - LOL!

Heads-up, for those of you who have VCV Rack, there's a device called TME by docB that I believe is based on the same concept, I imagine you could get a good idea of how it works from that (but maybe not, I have no idea honestly).
Indeed, docB’s TME operates on entirely the same principles. It produces and is operated using control voltages. MIDIMUSE produces MIDI note messages in the handy form factor of a M4L device, synced to your live set.

Maybe I will make a video at some point
