Device Overview

Name/Version: Session Idea Generator 1.0
Author: nozric
Description: Session Idea Generator

A device for randomly generating session ideas.

Tutorial video:

Clicking the ‘Generate’ button will suggest a random musical sub-genre and song title, as well as a suggested time signature, key and tempo.

The time signature and tempo can be linked to your project so that these parameters are automatically set in Ableton Live.

Also features buttons which open the following in your browser:

- FreeSound search based on song name (for sample ideas).
- YouTube search based on song name (for sample ideas).
- Google search based on sub-genre name (for more information about the generated sub-genre).
- Wikipedia search based in sub-genre name (for more information about the generated sub-genre).

The Challenge!

Click the ‘Generate’ button once and create a project based on the suggested sub-genre, tempo, key and time signature. Use the YouTube and FreeSound links and build the project only around samples sourced from the first result on each page.

Built upon two of my previous devices:

As well as the work of piearesquared (for the tempo and time signature randomisers):

This is great! Thank you. Going to give this a go today.

Is it intended behavior that the only subgenre I get suggested is Italian Aquacrunk?

No, the sub-genre should change every time you click 'generate'.

Is it just the sub-genre that doesn't change?

What version of Ableton Live are you using?

I'd like to be able to replicate this error myself to see what the problem is...

Yes, everything else changes except the subgenre, which is always Italian Aquacrunk (even after restarting Live).

Live 10.1.7
Mac OS Mojave 10.14.3
Macbook Pro Retina 13-inch Late 2013

I just gave it to a colleague to test on his Macbook Pro and it's working for him, so I guess it's only me!

Yeah, it's odd that it's working for your colleague and not you. There's no reason I can think of why it shouldn't be working and this is the only report I've had of this problem.

It's as if there's a connection missing between the 'generate' button and the code that generates the sub-genre ('Italian Aquacrunk' is what the sub-genre field is already populated with before the device starts and it automatically generates a new one).

Again though, I can't think why this connection would be broken, just on one machine and not another.

I guess you've already tried this, but have you downloaded the device again?

Just so I can check, would you be able to post a screen grab of the device opened up in Edit Mode in Max4Live? If you're not sure how to do this though, don't worry! I'll give it some more thought in any case.

@nozric - re-downloading device did the trick! weird. thanks for the awesome support!

@flis - Excellent! Pleased to hear it's working for you now :)

Although I doubt I can do all the genre's at all I want to check this out. it's a great idea of a device for the elites and curious.
