Description: | Hi all. So here's what's up. I've been isolating for a ~year~ due to all the corona craziness and I'm sure most of you’ve been, too. Perhaps you saw those tweets going around about how Shakespeare wrote King Lear during the plague and you're like, "Eureka! What better time than now to download a bunch of Max for Live devices and finally finish that electronic opus I've been working on for a decade???” And I get that; hell — I'm such a sucker, I'm using this time away from the world to work on a podcast. A podcast!!! Like we need another one of those!!! 🤣🤣🤣 For real, though, some of us are using this time to work on personal projects, and really — truly — I think that's great. I also think that if you're worried and anxious during this time and all this crap has hindered your ability to be creative, that's totally valid, too — you’re gonna come outta this thing swinging hard and we’d all better make like an [uzi] outlet and watch out. That said, there are those in our societies that still have to schlep to work despite all of this: our essential workers. I'm talking about those stocking the shelves at our super markets or those that are providing crucial government services. I'm talking about the folks on the front line: the doctors and nurses and all the rest in the medical field. Some of those workers are giving what Lincoln called, “the last full measure of devotion,” and for that, they’ll be remembered for what they were: the best among us. Of course, we can do more than just remember those that have given it all in the fight against this virus. For example, we can continue to wash our hands religiously; I don’t know about you, but I'll admit it, I used to be a so-so hand washer. But these days? I'm a WORLD CHAMPION. We can continue to practice social distancing and limit our outside exposure (because again, we’ve got electronic opuses and podcasts to work on!). I’d wager there’s also one more thing we can do, which brings us to the new device… ☎️☎️☎️ … dialRock!!! 🥳🥳🥳 OK, so what is it? dialRock! is an instrument device that… wait for it… sounds like a phone. That’s really it. 🤷♂️ OK, fine, I suppose I can talk a little more about it. BASICALLY: you feed it a midi note that corresponds to a dial on the phone. I’ve also added other phone-related tones which have their own corresponding midi notes. You’ve got attack/release controls for each, as well as global volume controls. I’ve done some slight in-the-box panning ‘cause I wanted to try out some juicy Max 8 MC stuff but I don’t think it’s too drastic. But other than all that… I think that covers it. Now, I’ve had the idea for this device for a long time. And as far as I know, there isn’t another device like this on maxforlive.com. Granted, I wouldn’t call my two minute search through the website comprehensive or exhaustive so like, if there is, my bad. There was Moffenzeef modular device like this, but I didn't have any more space on my rack (and also, RIP Moffenzeef). I did not “do my due diligence” but all we’re talking about are phone noises, all right? MY POINT IS: I threw this together this afternoon and I didn’t expand on a ton of the other features I initially thought up because I wanted to keep it simple. I might revisit this at some point (and if you have any ideas, please lemme know in the comments!) but it was important to get this out sooner rather than later. Why? Let me put it this way… I release all my Max devices for free. Part of that is because I’m usually begging, borrowing, and stealing a lot of patching wisdom; I’m standing on the shoulders of the giants over at the cycling74 forums. They’ve been kind enough to share their work with the world and I too want to be a part of that culture of giving. Another part of it are my precious bugs that I don’t ever want to feel obligated to fix lol And part of it is that I just want to get this stuff out into the world and in your hands! Obviously this device is still “free” to download BUT, given that, I do have one request. I mentioned earlier that there’s one more thing we can do besides washing our hands like pros and social distancing; if you download this device, I’d like you to pick a friend and give them a ring. Maybe call up your folks. Give a shout out to your buddy that’s a nurse or a doctor, check in, tell them they’ve been on your mind, see how they’re doing. Not just medically, but mentally. That’s something we CAN do right NOW. I’m sure a lot of them wouldn’t mind the temporary reprieve of hearing about something — anything! — else. Heck, maybe even the progress on your epic electronic album (I can promise you nobody wants to hear about my podcast so I swear I won’t bring it up when I do this, scouts honor ✌️). I’m sure a lot of you are already doing this. Of all the communities I’m a part of, you Max folks — funny, charming, and brilliant — are also among the kindest people I know, too. I don't know how you all do it all, but you do. So yeah, this device is my, "thank you." ❤️❤️❤️ Other than that — ! I hope you’re safe and doing well + your family and friends. And I hope you like the device! We’re gonna get through this, y’all. I’ll catch ya on the other side. @BrianBuchanan57 ✌️ |
