| Description: | NOT_DRONE is a generative drone synth for Ableton Live. Its four voices glide between pitches rather than retriggering, so it doesn't play notes — it drifts and breathes. Put it on a track and it starts sounding immediately. You don't even have to press play. Give it a root and a scale and it wanders: each voice holds a note for as long as you like — a couple of seconds to a full minute — then steps to another note in the scale. Every voice runs its own timer, so they drift out of step and the harmony keeps quietly re-forming underneath you. BLOOM is the part people notice. Now and then a held voice swells up to a 3rd, 5th or 7th above and glides back down. Because everything portamentos you don't hear a new note — you hear an overtone bloom out of the one already sounding, like harmonics jumping on a guitar left in front of an amp. It keeps running even when the drone is frozen, so a locked pad still breathes. Then shape it: resonant swept filter, saturation, an internal reverb, slow LFO drift, stereo spread and an upper-partial shimmer. Draw a mod curve and the whole thing opens up and closes down over minutes. FREEZE locks a voicing you love (and it's automatable). NEXT moves it on. BACK steps through the last 32 voicings to recover the one you just lost. It's also part of a band. NOT_DRONE is one of five NOT devices coming soon, and they hear each other across tracks with no routing. Set FOLLOW to CHORD and — if you have NOT_Chords — the drone stops choosing its own notes and becomes the current chord, gliding onto each new one as the progression moves. The others are NOT_Machine (generative drums), NOT_Bass, NOT_Chords and NOT_Melody. Same idea — you draw a map, they walk it — and six shared moods so the whole band changes character on one word. Names On Tapes This device — and the wider family of NOT devices — was created by Names On Tapes to mark the release of their fourth album, AYIN (out September 4th, 2026) Names On Tapes is the collaboration between Neil Kleiner (Dark Captain Light Captain, Four Tet collaborator) and Stacey Hine (The Sailplanes, Mihai Cucos Trio). Their music explores degraded loops, broken machines, and half-erased melodies, unfolding into fragile, calmly disorienting soundscapes where memory, texture, and melody quietly blur. Listen quietly.
