Description: | F-Coder is a FFT vocoder. The discrete time Fourier transform separates a time-domain signal into a complex frequency spectrum (amplitude and phase). Both the Carrier (side-chain) and Modulator signals are processed with the FFT so that each frequency bin (band) can be modulated. The amplitude of the carrier is multiplied by that of the carrier, and with the Phase mode "off", the original phase information from the carrier is retained (amplitude cross-synthesis). The other modes allow for complex convolution (phase added) and weird effects (phase multiplied). The FFT size (band resolution) can be chosen. Higher bands provides greater clarity, while fewer bands produces greater texture. The FFT bands are linearly distributed across the frequency spectrum, whereas we perceive sounds exponentially (equidistant logarithmic spacing). Therefore, the lower frequencies are over-represented. The yellow amplitude sliders represent the linear frequency distribution, so the shaping focusing on the left end of the plot will yield much more drastic results (try pulling out some lows at the far left edge). HOP is the factor of overlapping consecutive FFTs for smoothing. These are windowed with a HANN function for equal power crossfading. Attack and Release are also provided for Silence Bridging (Envelope follower / slew rate limiter on the carrier signal). L/R mode is complimented with Mid-Side mode and stereo linking (carrier). |
