| Description: | A tuner with a third column: not just which note you're on and how far off, but which note the scale actually wants. Sixteen scales with Live's own names, plus a LEARN button that suggests the track's key — with a calibrated confidence number — and writes it into Live's global key for Auto Shift to follow. Most tuners answer two questions: what note, and how far off. VocalPilot answers a third — what note it should be. Watch it work: https://youtu.be/CAZcQHS36cU Set the key and scale, and the right side of the display shows the target note, the distance to it in cents, and whether what you just sang belongs to the scale at all. A perfectly in-tune E4 is still outside the scale if the track is in F minor, and those are two different problems that no other tuner separates. Sixteen scales, using the exact names Ableton Live uses: Major, Minor, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Locrian, Harmonic Minor, Harmonic Major, Melodic Minor, Phrygian Dominant, Lydian Dominant, Lydian Augmented, Minor Pentatonic, Major Pentatonic and Minor Blues. THE KEY ASSISTANT Live 12.1 ships Auto Shift, and its most useful mode follows the project's global key. But nothing in Live works out what that key is — Song Root Note and Scale are fields somebody fills in by hand. Press LEARN, play eight bars, press it again. VocalPilot builds a pitch-class histogram weighted by duration and detection confidence, scores 192 candidates against tonal profiles, and suggests a key with a confidence figure and the runner-up beside it. APPLY TO LIVE writes it into Song Root Note and Scale Name, and moves the device's own KEY and SCALE menus to match. The confidence is calibrated against 1451 real vocal loops: at 80%+ the suggestion is right about 63% of the time, under 50% about 17%. Higher really does mean more often right, which is what makes the number worth showing. The suggestion only turns green from 80% up — below that it stays amber, and amber means check by ear. The write is never automatic. Changing the global key reconfigures every Auto Shift, every clip in scale mode and Push, so it stays a decision you make. HONEST LIMITS Monophonic — one voice at a time. Stacked harmonies confuse the detector and the confidence drops to tell you so. A melodic line that never touches the third can't distinguish major from minor, and the device says it's unsure instead of guessing quietly. No pitch correction: Auto Shift already does that, for free. VocalPilot exists to give it the one thing it can't work out for itself. Audio passes through untouched. Zero latency. Requires Ableton Live 12.1 or later with Max for Live. Windows and macOS. |
