| Description: | complexity gate is a Max for Live stereo audio effect device that computes the input signal’s complexity in real time, deriving a control signal that can automatically persist feedback sweet spots, chaotically modulate amplitude, and map onto other parameters in Live. Feedback sweet spots are notoriously difficult to control in real-time audio systems because their very nature is to either continue increasing or decreasing in loudness. complexity gate works around this by leveraging the assumption that feedback processes become tonal as copies repeat over and over. In order to measure a signal’s tonality, complexity gate uses autocorrelation, a statistical measurement of how much a signal matches a delayed copy of itself. A highly tonal signal has low complexity because it repeats and matches itself; conversely, a noisy signal has high complexity because it never repeats. The inspiration for complexity gate was to dynamically control gain in a feedback loop between a microphone and speaker: when the signal is more tonal, decrease gain, and when it is noisier, increase it. But by dialing in other configurations, complexity gate becomes an intermediary for chaotic, wild, and semi-automatic noisemaking.
