| Description: | Nostalgia Panner is a Max for Live audio effect created to investigate how memory and perception are shaped by distortion over time. The conceptual focus of the patch is nostalgia, understood not as an accurate recollection of the past, but as a subjective and often altered experience. As perception changes with age, both visual and auditory clarity can diminish, and memories themselves may become less precise. This device translates that idea into a spatial audio process. The patch is built using the Max for Live Surround Panner as a structural base and extends it into an eight-channel surround effect. Each of the eight output channels is processed through a dedicated band-pass filter. The center frequencies of these filters are distributed logarithmically across the audible spectrum, ranging from approximately 31 Hz to 13,228 Hz. As the sound rotates through the surround field, it passes sequentially through these frequency bands, creating a continuous spectral movement across space. A delay and a randomized tape-style warble are applied to further reduce clarity and introduce subtle temporal instability. Rotation is controlled by a phasor, allowing continuous movement around the full eight-channel field at an adjustable speed. |
