Fretboard is a Max for Live device offering an interactive guitar fretboard within Ableton Live, serving as both a visual MIDI monitor and a controller. It integrates seamlessly with Live's aesthetic.

Core Functionality: Play and Monitor Modes
Toggle between modes using the Play/Monitor button:

Monitor Mode
Visualize incoming MIDI notes, showing real-time velocity and duration. Use Freeze Active Notes to hold the display for analysis.

Play Mode
Click frets to output MIDI notes to any instrument.
Velocity and Sustain sliders control note dynamics and duration.
Strum Controls (Downstroke, Upstroke, Strum Duration, Strum Warp) create authentic guitar-like strums.
The Preset system lets you save and recall up to 16 configurations of notes and settings via its grid or Preset Dial.
Dot Behavior toggles Persist Mode (notes held indefinitely for strumming) and Blink Mode (momentary clicks, with adjustable Blink Time for visual duration).

Global Controls
These controls function in both modes:
Clear All: Deactivates all notes.
Frets Visible: Adjusts visible fret count (7 to 24).
Sharps/Flats: Toggles note labels between sharps and flats.
Tuning: Selects from 14 guitar tunings, visually reconfiguring the fretboard.

Visual Customization and Note Display
Customize Fretboard's appearance and note highlighting:
Opacity Controls: Adjust transparency for Fret Text, Held Note Text, and Fret Focus.

Note Display Control:
Key and Scale dropdowns highlight notes within a musical context.
Individual Note Toggles override scale settings to display specific notes.

Dot Color: Set distinct colors for In-Key and Out-of-Key active notes using accent colors or a custom picker.

Fret Focus: Activates visual blocks to highlight a specific fret range, reducing visual clutter.

Use Examples
For Guitar Players: A visual learning and practice tool, compositional aid for generating MIDI ideas, and a unique way to record guitar-style MIDI.

For Non-Guitarists: Helps understand guitar voicings, offers an alternative MIDI input method, and allows for creative sound design with realistic strumming on any instrument.

This is amazing!

I'm also a Max For Live developer working with guitar emulation/tools (and releasing this week)–I think our projects would work together really well, I'd love to compare notes some time:

This is awesome! As someone who learned music on the guitar and is now learning keys, this is great. One thing I do while looking at other pieces of music is try to transcribe Tabs on to the keys. I'm not great at reading standard notation (I know, I should get better) but it would be awesome if this device would be able to show the numbers on the frets as an option as a scale mode - it would really help speed up my workflow!
