| Description: | This simple device uses a spectral buffer to play back a sample. It can be used for example to alter the playback speed of the sample without altering the pitch (time stretching) or to freeze the playback entirely at a chosen point of the sample. Additionally, the frequency content of the spectrum can be altered with the "morph" feature. Features / Controls: - Waveform display with controls to select a section of the sample & to zoom in and out. - Spectrum display. Samples are loaded into the device by dragging & dropping them onto this display (the bottom one). - Selection controls: start and end points for scanning can be selected either by phase (0-1) or time (in ms) - Scan: enabling scan plays back the sample in a loop, between the selected end and start points, at the selected speed. Alternatively, the sample can be played by mapping for example an envelope or LFO to the start phase parameter, which i myself have found to allow for better control. - Shift: shifts the pitch of the sample. By enabling MIDI, the pitch parameter can be controlled by MIDI input. - Morph: an effect that sounds somewhat like pitch-shifting, but weirder. Bugs / Deficits: - Loading the sample is slow - it takes as long as the duration of the loaded sample. The loading progress should be visible in the spectrum display. - Additionally, i have found that in some instances the sample does not load for unknown reasons. If this happens, replace the device and try again, or load another sample and then load the original one. - The FFT size is set to 2048 and can only be changed by editing the Max patch. I have made copies of the device with the FFT sizes 512, 1024 and 4096, which can be uploaded by request. - The instrument is monophonic. |
