Device Overview

Name/Version: Degrees-Melopoeia 2
Author: SebastienClara
Description: Version 2 of Degrees family is only available for download at this address:

Degrees is a family of four devices dedicated to harmonic and melodic creation. In music, a degree is the place of a pitch in a musical scale.
From this position, devices of this family determine the chord of this degree and Degrees-Melopoeia composes a melody or arpeggio from the notes in the chord.

* Play
You control this device with keyboard, pad (only for v2) MIDI controller or clip.
The key/pad button is used to select its control mode. With the keyboard mode: C triggers the 1st degree, D the 2nd degree and so on. With the pad mode: C triggers the 1st degree, C# the 2nd degree and so on.

* Pitch distribution mode
song: modeling of human song.
rand: standard randomization.
The other modes are commun arpeggio.

* Rhythm distribution mode
Rhythm: straight (all notes have the same length).
Euclidean: enables euclidean rhythm mode distribution.

* Melody distribution
You can choose number of notes per chord (3, 4 or 5), number of notes per bar, number of bars of the melody and upper and lower range of notes in melody (ambitus of pitch distribution).

You can change note length, swing of the melody, velocity of notes, phase of melody (pattern offset) and you can use percentage chance of a rest in melody. When you create a clip, rests are included in created clips as muted notes.

Transposition button allows you to modify the pitch of the melody in relation to degrees and not in semitone. This feature implies that a transposition performs a chord inversion.
Octave knob transposes the melody in octave. This parameter determines the tessitura of the melody (bass, tenor, alto, soprano, etc.)

* Shuffle
Shuffle data of melody. You can trigger shuffle with the black keys of MIDI controller or MIDI clip.

* Renew the melody gradually (keep knob)
Percentage chance to keep note in melody. This feature allows you to renew the melody gradually, but it is not taken into account when you push new button or change another parameter.

* Randomization
Enables the periodic randomization of settings of certain parameters. The small R buttons allow to enable or disable the randomness. Periodic randomization works only when Live's playback button is enabled.

* Clip creation
Creates a clip of melody in the same track. This feature only works with Live 11 and above. Also, playing clip with trigger Degrees-Melopoeia unless disabled.
This feature prints the melody or arpeggio only of the current selected degree. To create a clip of a particular progression, you must route the MIDI data produced by device to another track for recording.

* Info
Degrees-Melopoeia is the fusion and augmentation of my previous degrees devices (Melody by Chords and Melody Euclidean by Chords). You can watch my previous videos of these old devices here (in french but with english subtitles): and

Saves the value of cNotes in Live project.

Choice of the quality of the chords (sus2, third, sus4, sixth).
Possibility to control the device with a MIDI pad controller (like push).
Fixes a minor interface bug.
Fixes the problem of phantom notes when Degrees-Chord controls Degrees-Melopoeia.

hi Sebastien, I am using this device with Ableton 11, and no midi is passing through... I cannot get it to work.

Have you tested with Ableton 11?

Hi aiotea,
Thanks for your feedback.

The device passes all MIDI messages except MIDI notes.
The MIDI notes allow to control the device. C triggers the 1st degree, D the 2nd degree and so on. The black notes also trigger a shuffle of melody.

To operate the device, you need to use a MIDI controller or a MIDI clip. It also works with the mouse when you click on degree, but this feature is more useful to test something.

I hope I answered your question.

I forgot, the device can follow Degrees-Chord when the sync mode of the latter is activated.
