Device Overview

Name/Version: Convolvor 1.0
Author: opticon93
Description: Hi,

This is a Spectral Convolver. It performs Cross Synthesis of two audio signals. The first signal is the Input audio and the second signal is from one of three Internal sources:

a controllable Sample

a simple FM synth

a Noise source with a filter.

It convolves the first signal with the Spectral Amplitude of the second, or (if the double arrow button is pressed) it convolves the Spectral Amplitude of the first signal with the second.

The Sample player is based on groove~. The sample Pitch and Speed can be independently controlled.

Even though this is an Audio Device, it can receive midi from my D1 Proc11, Progenerator (and soon to be released) Proletarian Sequencers. In this case, the Restart button causes playback to restart from the beginning of the sample on each Note in. The Midi button allows control of the Pitch of the sample (C3 corresponds to no pitch change, C4 is an octave up, ...). If you don't want to use my sequencers, you can automate the Pitch by hand. It has a variety of "Quality" and "Mode" settings. I really like Basic quality with Efficient mode.

The FM synth has standard Carrier, Modulator and Index controls. Strangely, you can hear the effect even when the Carrier frequency is way outside the audible range. Even stranger, the Max midi-to-frequency converter will convert integers outside of the standard midi range of 0..127 (8.1 Hz.. 12.5 Khz). So I added an Octave shifter to get to those really high/low frequencies outside of the standard MIDI range.

The Noise module offers both Pink and White noise and 4 choices of filter: Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass and Notch.

It can get preposterously loud so I added a bypassable limiter on the output.

Have fun

I can't get any audible output from the device, no matter if I'm inserting it into an audio or a midi track.

It only makes sound when both sources, Input and Internal, are audible. In particular, it needs to be put after something that is making sound like an instrument or an audio clip.

If you are using the Internal Sample as the second sound source, you need to make sure a sample is actually loaded up and the Pitch, Speed and Length are non-zero (I've done this so many times).

On the FM synth, I like to make sure the Index is around 60 or greater. With some Input material, lower values can quickly put things outside of the audible frequency spectrum.

I've tried it on all three of my PC's with no problems (one of them is 32-bit Max 6.1.7). Maybe you are using an older version of Max? Does the Max Window provide any details (In Live, right click on the Convolvor title bar -> "open max window")?

Anybody else with issues?

Thanks for the quick reply. My bad, I first thought that I'd have to drag and drop two separate samples into the patch interface to make it work. I'm on Max 6 and it's now working like it probably should.

Thanks for sharing!

No worries. Actually, I'm considering an Instrument version of it that can use two samples.
